Maximize Engineer Class Sprocket Life
To maximize the life of your sprocket and chain there are a few things to make sure of:
First of all you want to make sure that your chain is traveling in the correct direction (per the above diagram), which is the open end of the chain leading first. This is especially important with offset sidebar cast and bushed chain without rollers. Running the chain in the correct direction will remove any frictional wear between the link and drive sprocket tooth. From the diagram it can be seen that if the closed end of the link leads, then the link itself rotates on the driving tooth as the wheel articulates, whereas, if in the CORRECT position, with the open end of the link leading, the following link to the one actually being driven merely articulates on its pin as the sprocket wheel revolves.
Secondly you want to make sure that the chain is aligned as much as possible. Failure to properly align your chain will not only wear the sprockets, but it will also wear down the chain and put additional stress on other components involved.
