The roller thrust bearings are suitable for heavy loads due to the increase in surface area. Axial load roller bearings can only support axial loads because of their design and axial rigidity. A thrust roller bearing is capable of self-aligning, which is ideal for mounting error or shaft deflection.

Double-row thrust roller bearings have two rows of cylindrical rollers in one raceway. This allows the bearing to withstand greater radial loads. The added support also allows higher-speed applications, including rapid acceleration. One particular type of roller thrust bearing, the spherical roller thrust bearing, can support radial and axial loads due to the concave inner raceway. The automotive and aerospace industries use thrust roller bearings and benefit from their ability to maintain higher axial loads and speeds.
