Tapered Roller Thrust Bearings

Tapered roller thrust bearings support high axial loads but cannot support radial loads. Their high axial load capacity is due to the tapered bearings focusing the axial load to the apex of the taper, which is located at the shaft. A tapered roller thrust bearing consists of two raceways, tapered-barrel cylindrical bearings and a cage to keep the bearings in place. These are available in both single direction, which has a single layer of bearings, and double direction, which has two layers of bearings with a washer between the two, allowing the two raceways to move independently of each other. A tapered thrust roller bearing can withstand the highest load within its class of bearings. Sealed tapered roller thrust bearings take advantage of a true rolling motion, thanks to their tapered design, which provides greater longevity of the bearing and reduces the generation of heat and wear. These bearings are used in machining tools, plastic extruders, oil well swivels, industrial transmissions and the heavy-duty automotive industry.
