Split Sprocket Cost Saving
To decide if the split sprocket option is right for you all we need to do is some simple math.
Formula:
Split sprocket cost= SP
solid sprocket cost= SL
Labor hours to replace sprocket= LA
Labor cost per hour=LR
LA X LR X 2 + SP= Toal Installed Cost
LA X LR X 2 + SL= Toal Installed Cost
*Multiply by 2 for instal and uninstall*
Example:
The average salary for maintenance crew workers ranges from $16.50/ hr up to $23/ hr. The average labor burden (taxes + benefits) is about 25%, this means our actual direct cost to the company now ranges from $20.63/ hr up to $28.75/ hr. For simplification purposes in our example, we will use the median labor rate of $24/ hr.
The average cost increase of a split sprocket ranges between $90 and $170 for machine work, materials, and hardware. We'll use a median cost of $130.
We will use a solid sprocket/ base sprocket cost of $20 and 4 hours of time to replace or install a solid sprocket and 1/4 hour for a split sprocket. The solid sprocket install time can vary widely depending on what all the install and uninstall entails.
Solid Sprocket: 4-hours X $24 X 2 + $20=$212 total sprocket + maintance cost
Split Sprocket: 0.25 hours X $24 X 2 + $130 + $20=$162 total sprocket + maintance cost
The Diffirence/ Benifits: A $$ amount savings of $50 per sprocket overall and the added benifit of hassle-free maintance, making everyines job easier.
Split Roller Chain Sprocket Types

The two types of split roller chain sprockets are B-hub and C-hub. B-hub sprockets have a hub on one side and are the most common split sprocket configuration. C-hub sprockets have hubs on both sizes, these are more common in larger diameters and for extreme duty applications.
Split Roller Chain Sprocket Manufacturing
The first step for making a split sprocket is to create the bore size (if required).
The second step is keying the sprocket, then putting a set-screw or two into it.
Thirdly the sprocket is then machine split into two pieces
Lastly the bolt places and bolts get installed into the sprocket so it can be split and put back into a solid piece.
Split Hubs For Roller Chain Sprockets
In a lot of cases, a split sprocket cost can be decreased with a split hub for roller chain sprockets. This option also makes it easier for a do it yourself type of circumstance which can save you even more on the up-front costs. The S350 - S1000 hubs are made in a way that matches the hubs on our normal split sprockets so like our split sprockets these hubs when assembled have no dangerous projecting bolts or ears. Use the charts below to designate the appropriate split hub needed for your sprocket.
Note: B-hub sprockets need one hub and C-hub sprockets need two.
