Single-strand heavy-duty roller chains differ by having a thicker side plate. This added material means that the chain can withstand higher shock loads and are ideal for applications such as heavy equipment, agricultural machinery, grills and more. Roller Chain Sizing
Sizing the right roller chain for your application comes down to a few key factors:
Tensile Strength - The tensile strength of a roller chain is the rating that represents the force required for breaking the chain. There are three different tensile strength values; minimum, average, and ultimate. The minimum tensile strength is the lowest value of breakage across several testes done on the chain, while the average tensile strength is the median breaking point between the test, and the ultimate tensile strength is the highest load that any particular chain within the tests was able to withstand. Not all roller chains possess the same strengths even from the same manufacture and batch. Almost every manufactures will display the tensile strength as the "ultimate tensile strength" to pose that theirs is stronger than a particular competitor however, we typically display our tensile strength ratings as the minimum tensile strength so undersized and safety factor calculations can be done accurately.
Working Load - The working load is the strength measurement needed when sizing a roller chain for an application. This is the recommended load for a chain with several factors in play. Sizing a roller chain off of tensile strength alone is not only dangerous but will disappoint when it comes to the desired service factor.
Application Conditions - It is important to take a look at certain conditions such as temperature, corrosion, abrasion, and hours in operation. Standard roller chains are manufactured from carbon steel, meaning that their temperature range is limited and they will corrode in abrasive and corrosive applications. Dimensional Requirements - Sometimes applications can be restricted on space requirements, when picking a roller chain size it is important to not go outside of your applications specific dimensional circle allowed for the chain.
